Cancer Australia is calling for nominations for the 2014 Jeannie Ferris Cancer Australia Recognition Award that recognises outstanding contributions to improving outcomes for women with gynaecological cancers.
Announcing the call for the second round of the Awards today, Professor Helen Zorbas, CEO, Cancer Australia, said “Gynaecological cancers continue to have a significant toll on our community. On average, around 13 women are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer each day in Australia.
“This month, Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, it is particularly timely to remind ourselves of the impact of ovarian cancer, the most common cause of gynaecological cancer death in Australia.” said Professor Zorbas.
“In this context I am once again delighted to call for nominations for the Jeannie Ferris Cancer Australia Recognition Award to recognise the exceptional efforts made by individuals to improve wellbeing and support and reduce the impact of gynaecological cancers.”
The Jeannie Ferris Cancer Australia Recognition Award is offered in two categories. The first category is open to those with a personal experience of gynaecological cancer, either as a woman with a diagnosis of gynaecological cancer, or as a community member, or family members or carers who have been directly involved in supporting a woman with gynaecological cancer.
The second category is open to health professionals and researchers working in the area of gynaecological cancers.
The Award is named in honour of the late Jeannie Ferris, former Senator for South Australia who was committed to raising awareness about gynaecological cancer in Australia. Senator Ferris was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October 2005 and passed away in April 2007.
Nominations open Thursday, 13 February and will close at 5.00 p.m, Friday, 21 March, 2014 (EDST)).

Gynaecological cancer is an overarching term used to describe cancer of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva, as well as, of the fallopian tube and placenta (a pregnancy related cancer).
Cancer Australia is the Australian Government’s national agency providing leadership in cancer control to improve outcomes for those affected by cancer, their families and carers.
