Cancer Australia’s Advisory Group structure supports the agency’s leadership role in national cancer control and the delivery of the goal outlined in the Cancer Australia Strategic Plan 2014-2019, namely, Shape national cancer control in Australia; Improve cancer outcomes; Inform effective and sustainable cancer care; and Strengthen capability for national cancer control.

Group members represent a broad range of expertise, experiences and sectors, including policy, research, health promotion and communication. Consumers are represented on all Cancer Australia Advisory Groups.

Cancer Australia values the advice and support extended to the organisation by the following strategic Advisory Groups:

Australian Brain Cancer Mission Strategic Advisory Group

The Australian Brain Cancer Mission Strategic Advisory Group provides strategic advice and guidance on achieving the goal of the Australian Brain Cancer Mission (the Mission); provides guidance on alignment of key initiative within the Mission’s objectives; provides advice on emerging issues nationally and internationally to inform the work of the Mission; identifies and advises on collaborative opportunities and approaches to achieve the Mission’s goal; and identifies and advises on leveraging opportunities and investments while ensuring there is no duplication of initiatives, infrastructure or platforms.

The group is chaired by Professor Adele Green AC who commenced as Chair in January 2018.

Intercollegiate Advisory Group

The Intercollegiate Advisory Group provide advice across the spectrum of cancer control to inform national approaches to reduce variations in cancer outcomes; promotes the use of best available evidence to achieve effective cancer care; identify collaborative approaches across the system to address cancer control challenges; and provide advice on emerging issues nationally and internationally to inform Cancer Australia work.

The group is chaired by Professor Sandra O'Toole who commenced as Chair in March 2020.

Leadership Group on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Control

The Leadership Group on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Control provides strategic advice and guidance to assist Cancer Australia in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer control; champions cross-sector collaboration in monitoring the progress of priorities in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Framework; identifies and leverages opportunities to improve cancer outcomes at system, service and community levels; identifies emerging issues of national importance; and provides input and advice in areas of specialised expertise.

The group is chaired by Professor Jacinta Elston who commenced as Chair in September 2016.

Lung Cancer Advisory Group

The role of the Lung Cancer Advisory Group is to provide Cancer Australia with expert advice regarding the issues and activities related to lung cancer. The group informs priorities of Cancer Australia’s program of work in lung cancer; provides strategic guidance and expertise in relation to specific projects; and identifies barriers to optimal cancer control and collaborative opportunities to assist in advancing national lung cancer control activities.

The group is chaired by Associate Professor Paul Mitchell who commenced as Chair in July 2017.

Research and Data Advisory Group

The Research and Data Advisory Group provides expert advice to Cancer Australia about the strategic priority areas of focus in cancer research and data to support the Cancer Australia Strategic Plan 2014-2019.

Members provide expert advice and overall guidance on research, clinical trials and data including: current and emerging issues in national and international cancer research, clinical trials and data; Cancer Australia priorities in research and data; strategies to strengthen and build current programs of work in research clinical trials and data; key national and international partnerships and collaborations which support Cancer Australia’s leadership role in research, clinical trials and data, and future Cancer Australia research, clinical trials and data initiatives.

The group is chaired by Professor Adele Green AC who commenced as Chair in November 2014.
