New Appointments to Cancer Australia’s Advisory Council

The Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon. Greg Hunt MP, today announced the appointment of three new members to the Cancer Australia Advisory Council for a three-year term. Six current members have been reappointed. With these changes, the new Cancer Australia Advisory Council will be seventy per cent female.

The new members of the Cancer Australia Advisory Council are:

  • Ms Deborah Henderson,
  • Professor Timothy Hughes
  • Dr Ranjana Srivastava OAM

The reappointed members are:

  • Professor Joanne Aitken
  • Associate Professor Penny Blomfield
  • Associate Professor Kelvin Kong
  • Dr Serena Sia
  • The Hon Jillian Skinner
  • Ms Lillian Leigh

“The appointments are drawn from Australia’s world-class scientific and medical community and possess a diverse skills set to support Cancer Australia’s strategic focus on cancer control and care, “said Minister Hunt.

They represent a balanced and expert group to assist Cancer Australia in its world class work of saving and protecting the lives of the approximately 145,000 Australians diagnosed with cancer each year.”

The CEO of Cancer Australia, Professor Dorothy Keefe welcomed the announcement of the appointments.

“I am delighted to welcome these new members to the Advisory Council. Their expert advice and contribution will be critical to our continued efforts to improve outcomes for all people affected by all cancers.”

“In particular, I would like to thank the outgoing members of the Advisory Council, former Chair Dr William Glasson AO, and Perry Sperling PSM for their long serving dedication and highly valued contribution.” Professor Keefe said.

Professor Tracey O’Brien was appointed Chair of the Advisory Council in April 2021. Continuing Advisory Council members are Dr Benjamin Brady, Dr Elizabeth Marles and Dr Chris Milross.

The Advisory Council, established under the Cancer Australia Act 2006, provides advice to the CEO of Cancer Australia about the performance of its functions in providing national leadership to reduce the impact of cancer in the community.
